A ball carrier that can “fix” a defender, so that defender cannot move over to tackle the receiver, has taken that defender out of the game for a moment.
To fix a player effectively means a defender or defenders end up planting their feet in the ground ready for contact.
Fixing a defender does not need to be a 2 v 1 situation.
In this 3 v 3 scenario the initial ball carrier fixes two of the three defenders creating space on the outside. They does this by running into two defenders defensive zones, “eyeballing” the middle defender and holding the ball under one arm.
