Session builders take you from one player to a unit to work on their skills piece by piece. In this builder, we look at the lineout.
Thrower
A player stands 5m from a post and aims to hit about 4m up the post. Every time they hit it, they take two steps back. Every time they miss, they take one step forward.
Jumper/lifter
From a standing position, a player aims to get off the ground as far as possible. They should extend themselves so their toes are pointing down and their hands straight up. They must land where they jumped from. Progress by the player moving forward and then jumping and landing on the same spot.
A thrower sits and throws to a jumper who initially doesn’t jump. All throws must be to the shoulder of the jumper. Swap which shoulder to aim at. Develop by having the jumper aim to take the throw when their feet are off the ground.
A thrower aims to throw to a team mate while a defender aims to beat them into the air. Develop by allowing the jumpers to come 2m forward or 2m back.
Add in a “receiver”. The jumper must deflect the ball to the receiver under pressure from a defender. Ideally, they catch it, but a deflection is also acceptable.
Two jumpers compete for a throw. Each jumper has a front lifter. The front lifter only aims to lift them until the lifter has straighten their back, not their arms, so their hands are in line with their shoulders. Develop by adding in movement, with the jumpers and lifters moving forwards and backwards. However, look for any jump to be up and down on the spot.
