Players do not only need skills and rules. They also need to believe they can do it, they belong, and they make a difference.
Listen to the 8 minute episode with Dan Cottrell, and Stu James, coach developer at Guildford RFC.
Belief is not the same as mindset. It is closer to identity. It is the quiet statement a player carries into training and matches: “I can do this”, “I belong here”, and “I make a difference”.
“Belief is a sense of identity.”
As coaches, we often spend most of our time on skills and structure. We explain the game, correct technique and set up practices. But we can easily miss the player who has the skill, knows the rules, yet still does not step forward.
If a player does not believe they belong, they may hide. If they do not believe they make a difference, they may stop calling, leading or taking responsibility. If they do not believe they can do it, their skill can disappear under pressure.
“The players who struggle most often do not lack ability, they lack belief.”
This is not about empty praise. Telling a player they are brilliant is not enough. Belief grows when a coach notices something specific, expresses it clearly, and then reinforces it when the player acts on it.
In your next session, identify one player who may need belief more than another drill. Notice what they bring. Tell them. Give them a clear action.
For example: “You see space early. I want you to call that louder today.” Then watch for it. When it happens, reinforce it.
“Notice means caring.”
Belief is built in small, intentional moments. A word before a game. A quiet comment during training. A reminder afterwards that their effort was seen.
It does not have to be perfect. It just has to be intentional.
