This activity helps to develop your players’ reactions post-tackle, so that they can be much more effective in the defence (or attack).
Be fast off the ground after the tackle.
At least one ruck pad, a ball and some cones.
ACTIVITY STARTER: One player grips a ruck pad and lays on top of it. There is a coloured cone either side of them. You call a colour and the player rolls over the cone, with the pad, so they end up on top of the pad again. They then get to their feet to do the next activity.
ROLL 2v1: A player tries to stop two players scoring. Those two players come from a point outside the box. Use either full tackling or ‘shoulder’ touch, where the player just needs to get their shoulder into one of the ball carriers.
ROLL BATTLE: Two players roll over the cone. Roll a ball towards one of the players. They aim to pick it up and score in the box at the side of the two pads. The other player aims to stop them, using full or touch tackling.
ROLL OFFSIDES: The ruck pad acts as the offside line. Another defender acts as a team-mate. Two attackers now come into the box, with a feeder putting the ball down by the pad, and then passing it when the other two attackers are ready.
DEVELOPMENTS: The cones allow you to make the defender move towards or away from the attackers. Put other coloured cones around the pad, so the defender has to twist the pad in different directions.
Attackers move forward when called forward
After rolling towards the called cone (red here), the tackler gets up to defend
Both players roll over the cones before getting to their feet
Throw the ball to either player, normally along the ground
Two attackers play from the feeder
One defender starts in the box ready, moving into position depending on the direction of roll
After the roll, a feeder moves into position to pass, depending on where the ruck pad finishes
The ‘bouncing’ defender rolls in the direction indicated, and then into play to defend
