Keep your defenders active in training and work on a range of tackles by using this exercise that also works on confidence and technique.
Encourages defenders to use good footwork and get close to make tackles.
A 10m square with ruck pads placed both sides at half way. Three different-coloured cones and one ball.
An attacker and defender stand near the far ruck pad with the attacker facing the coloured cones and the defender facing the pad.
(Which pad depends on which shoulder you wish the player to tackle with so in our example, the defender is facing the pad on the right so they will be tackling with the left shoulder).
You call a colour and the ball carrier runs around that cone and tries to score (see picture 1).
The defender runs around the pad and makes the tackle appropriate to the cone called (see picture 2).
Picture 3 shows:
RED is a smother tackle (aiming for the ball).
YELLOW is a waist tackle.
GREEN is a leg tackle.
Focus most on getting close to the ball carrier and getting the head in the right position.
