This is a game that pressures defences into covering threats while requiring them to maintain a strong line. The defenders must be acutely aware of the danger posed by the man in the red bib, while the attackers must use him to their advantage.
What you need for this game
- 20 Players
- 1 Ball
- 6 Cones
- 2 Red bibs
Set-up
Use cones to mark out a playing area measuring 60m x 40m. Use more cones to mark a halfway line, and use
both ends as try lines, as shown below.
Rules
This game should be played to regular two-handed touch rugby rules. (If you need a reminder of the rules of two-handed touch rugby, see page v.)
What you do as coach
Divide your players into two teams of 10, and ask one player on each team to wear a red bib (or another colour that stands out).
Nominate a team to begin as attackers and give them the ball.
On your whistle, the attackers start the game by taking a tap from the halfway line, with the defenders positioned 10m back in their own half.
The key difference between this game and regular touch rugby is that when one of the players in a red bib is in possession, he must be touched by three separate players before he is deemed to be tackled. This poses interesting challenges for both sides: the attackers should look to get the ball to the bib wearer to utilise his extra freedom, while the defenders need to be very organised to counter his threat.
- Two teams of 10.
- Start with tap from halfway.
- Drop to floor when tackled.
- Player with red bib must be tackled by three separate players.
Note:When the player in the red bib has the ball he will draw players to him. See if his team mates give him good support to exploit the space he creates.
Inform:Defenders will need good communication and solid organisation to cope with the threat of the player in the red bib. Let all the players know.
Observe:When he has the ball, the player in the bib will find himself under pressure from many sides. Give the bib to different players to see who copes.
