With defences working hard to get into the attacking line and intercept passes, develop more effective ways to beat the interceptions by passing over the defenders.
CHALLENGE
Use fast, accurate passes to clear defenders.
SET UP
Cones and then a 20m box, set out as in the middle picture. Balls.
HOW TO DO IT
Technical game
- Develop better passing technique with a high ball contest.
- A passer aims to throw the ball to their team-mate, while another player tries to block the pass.
- Passes start below the shoulder.
- Swap after each go.
- Develop by having the passer turning and passing sideways.
Game
- One team aim to pass the ball from one end of the box to the other. All passes must start below shoulder height. The passer must always be facing one of the touchlines. They can move towards a touchline but not up the pitch.
- The game starts with the ball carrier at one end of the box.
- Two defenders and two attackers start in the nearest large box, and are not allow in the box closest to the ball carrier.
- The ball carrier aims to pass to a team mate. The defenders aim to block a pass.
- A successful pass means the ball carrier passes into the next box, but can’t move towards that box.
- The other players move into the box, but one of the defenders has to stay on the line between the boxes.
- The same is repeated into the small box at the end.
- A completed pass into the small box means a point.
- An interception means an immediate turnover. Otherwise, the attack has three lives before the other team restart with the ball.
- A ball carrier passes from below shoulder height to a team-mate
- The team-mate and another player battle for the ball

- A ball carrier aims to pass to one of their team-mates. They can only be facing touchline when they pass but can move up and down
- Two defenders are allowed into the big boxes where the attackers are aiming to receive the ball, one is allowed to move up and down the middle line
- Knock down = life lost
- Interception = turnover and play
- On a successful catch, that ball carrier can move towards any touchline but not forward
- The attack progress into the next box
- They score by taking a pass in the narrow box, where two of the defenders can go also
