What to think about
There are three elements to this technique:
- The ball placement must be secure.
- The ball carrier has to work hard on the ground to push the ball back to his own team.
- All while maintaining a narrow gate for the opposition to enter from.
A “thin” gate means that only one defender can legitimately go for the ball. Prevent this by having the support player go straight over the ball,“shutting the gate behind him”. The third player gets in right behind him, giving him support and standing over the ball.
set-up
- The ball carrier presents the ball so as to minimise the size of the tackle gate.
- The next support player goes over the ball, then stops just beyond the tackled player.
- The last support player goes right in behind the previous support players and stops at the ball.
What you get your players to do
Split into groups of four with one ball and one ruck pad per group. One player, holding the ball, drives the ruck pad holder. He goes to ground and presents the ball.
The next player drives directly over the tackled player and the third player drives right in behind him. Swap roles and repeat.

Groups of three players drive into a ruck pad (step 1) with the ball carrier going to ground, snapping the ball back in the tackle and the next two players following over, one in front of the other to create a long thin ruck (step 2).
Development
Take away the ruck pad and allow the defender to wrestle the ball carrier to the ground so he has to work harder to place the ball.
Add another player, who acts as a defender. He has to try to steal the ball or disrupt the ruck.

Put six players at the side. Release three to attack the ruck pad holder and defenders after taking a pass from a feeding player. Set up a long, thin ruck.
Game situation
Put six players and a feeder about 3m away from a ruck pad holder and defender (you can put them inside some cones to provide a focal point for the first ruck).
Get three of the players to run at the ruck pad with the ball carrier going to ground while the other two create a long, thin ruck.
The feeder picks up the presented ball and passes it on to the next three players who run at another pad holder and defender. The defender aims to steal the ball or disrupt the ruck.

After the first three players have set the long, thin ruck, the ball is fed to the next three to do the same with the second set of defenders.
What to call out
- “Fight to get to ground and snap back the ball”
- “Get your head over the ball and then beyond”
- “Get low before the contact, not at the contact”
