It can be a challenge coming up with meaningful practices on counter attacking. “Counter backs” works on the passing and running skills of the back field players. Because the exercises are very repetitive, the session should also hone skills, enabling the players to look up and see the options.
Set up five defenders and four attackers as in the bottom picture. Initially, the defenders have the ball. They pass it across their line until you shout two letters. One of those defenders kicks the ball into the backfield area, his nearest team mate stays with him. These players can only defend in the area they are in. The other three defenders move forward.
Play normal rugby laws, but don’t allow rucks, mauls or kicking.
