To be a success, this game relies on the clean execution of the core handling skills under pressure, but ultimately it’s an exercise that highlights the importance of “straightening up” lines of running.
What you need for this game
Set-up
Use cones to mark out a playing area measuring 30m x 20m. Use more cones to mark a halfway line at 10m, and then use a further cone to mark out a 5m section of the halfway line. One end will be the try line, as shown
1.
Rules
Play two-handed touch rugby.
Each game ends when either a try is scored, the defenders take possession of the ball or the player in possession is tackled by a defender.
What you do as coach
1. Line up five attackers at one end of the playing area, and three defenders in the 5m space marked out on the halfway line. Give the ball to the attacker nearest the side line, facing the defenders.
2. On your whistle, the attackers move forwards with the aim of scoring at the try line. As the attackers move, the defenders can come out of their 5m space to defend against them.
3. As the defenders move up and “slide” across, the attackers must try to out-flank them with speed of handling and lines of running, but they must pass the ball to the outside only.
After a few plays, try the game with the defenders coming from the opposite side.
How you can progress the game
Keep the defenders guessing by allowing the attackers one inside pass.
Give the attackers more freedom by allowing them to play any way they wish, even using set calls if they like.
- Five attackers at end.
- Three defenders in 5m space on halfway line.
- Pass ball in.
- Outline: As you pass the ball in to the attacking side, remind them that it’s the ball carrier’s line that’s the key to success.
- Attackers advance towards the try line.
- Defenders move out to face them.
- Call out: Let the defenders know you want them to move up quickly before sliding across, and that they must stay square on to the attack.
- Attackers attempt to beat defenders.
- Attackers can pass to the outside only.
- Note: Are the defenders communicating and nominating? Do the attackers look to straighten their lines to get through? Make a note.
