The primary focus of this game is on the support players and the lines that they run. But you’re also looking for both the defenders and the attackers to get their heads up and look at the available options.
What you need for this game
Set-up
Use cones to mark out a playing area measuring 15m x 20m. Decide which end will be the try line and use more cones to mark a line 5m in from it, as shown
1.
Rules
Play two-handed touch rugby.
Each game ends when either a try is scored, the defenders take possession of the ball or the player in possession is tackled by a defender.
What you do as coach
1. Place four attackers in single file at the opposite end of the playing area from the try line, and three defenders, also in single file, in the middle of the 5m line, facing away from the attackers. You stand outside the area to feed the ball in to the attackers.
2. On your whistle, pass the ball to the lead attacker who heads for the try line flanked by the other attackers who should spread out in support.
3. As the attackers move forwards, the defenders must turn and defend against the attackers, trying to prevent them from going over for a try.
How you can progress the game
Change the angles that the attackers have to run by starting them from the left or right corner of the playing area instead of the middle. Do the same for the defenders by starting them from the left or right ends of the 5m line.
Disorientate the attackers by making them start with their backs to the defenders, then turn before receiving the pass from you.
Mix things up further by feeding the ball in from alternate sides.
- Four attackers in a line facing upfield.
- Three defenders on 5m line facing upfield.
- Establish: Let your players know you’ll be looking at these key skills: decision-making, communication, support, vision and lines of running.
- Four attackers spread out.
- You pass the ball in.
- Attackers run towards the try line.
- Call out: As they start to move, shout to your players, explaining that you want to see them with their heads up, scanning the situation.
- As the attackers move forward, the defenders turn and protect the try line.
- Urge: Encourage the defenders to nominate the attackers that they want to target, and urge them to work together to achieve their goal.
