Technique for leg drive in contact
Practising leg drive
Do these exercises at the start of training (at the end of the warm-up is ideal) when players are fresh and they can maintain good body positions. Emphasise the drive needs to be explosive and a good body position needs to be maintained throughout.
Resisted running: Use resisted running to develop effective leg drive. Always practise on firm ground. Get your players to perform resisted runs over 3m, ensuring good technique throughout. Set up the players in pairs with one working and the other providing the resistance. The players can then alternate, each doing five drives before resting.
Extended pad drive: Players start 1m away from a ruck pad held by their partner. They “explode” forward and drive the pad back for six steps using good technique. They repeat the exercise four times and then swap the positions.
