Most of the time, your attack will face an organised defence. In which case, your players will need to break it down using good lines of running and accurate passing. This session works towards a 3 v 3 situation, challenging the attackers to move in or out to create gaps.

What to think about
This session forces players to run different angles. Repetition will ingrain better running lines, and will challenge players to pass to others running these lines.
The “cut” is a hard word which gives a sense of the angle to take.
You might need to start the players slowly and narrow the space they are running, so the angles are not too acute and the passes not so long.
An important part of this session is communication – where and when to pass.
set-up
Run angles, don’t run straight against an organised defence.
Believe in your running line and run hard.
Tell the ball carrier where you are!
What you get your players to do
Set up five gates as in the top picture, the size of the gate can be one to three metres wide, depending on the skills of your players.
The attackers cannot run through the gate immediately in front of them. Both the gates behind the front three are out of bounds for all attackers.
The players run forward and use one pass before reaching each set of cones.
The attackers cannot run through the gate in front and the back two. They must pass before each set of gates if possible.
Development
Put three defenders on the back set of cones, as in the middle picture.
Each defender runs towards a set of cones nearest to the attackers.
In the meantime, the attackers move forward, passing when they want. Use touch tackling to start with, but do not allow interceptions.

Three defenders run towards the gates at angles. Attackers must try to beat these defenders. Use touch tackling but do not allow interceptions.
Game situation
Put three attackers in the middle of the box, with a spare attacker with a ball at the side. Have three defenders at each end of the box.
The attackers attack one end. If they make a mistake or score they turn and attempt to score at the other end.
The last attacker to touch the ball takes the ball to side, and the attacker who is outside the area joins the attacking group with his ball.
Defenders can only move forward when the ball crosses the half way line.
See how many tries can be scored in one minute.
Three players attack each end continuously for one minute, changing direction after each try or mistake.
What to call out
“Change your angle early and run hard”
“Listen to the calls”
“Pass at a player running in, pass in front of a player running out”
