EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Slick slaloms

Younger players lack confidence in their passing ability so drift towards the receiver before passing. This takes up time and space so work on passing and support skills with this simple game.

Set-up

A 25x10m box divided in half lengthways to form two channels. Two players wait to enter the channel. In front of the player on the left are four poles/cones in a line 1m apart about 5m away to form a ski-like slalom. In front of the player on the right about 15m away are four poles/cones in a line 1m apart. This is mirrored in the other channel and four more players wait behind. Two upright tackle tubes are placed at the opposite end (picture 1).

The rules

Players A and D sprint through their poles with B and C as support. Once A and D get through, they pass to B and C who go through their poles (picture 2).

Once B and C are through, they pass back to A and D who score a try, round the tackle tubes, sprint back and pass to the next players waiting (picture 3).

Race teams against each other and also time them to find the fastest team.

Scoring

The first team to four wins. Time runs so you can also discover the fastest team.

Tell them

“Two hands on the ball, accelerate out of the gates.”

“Passing hands towards the receiver. Pass across body in front of the receiver.”

“Call for the ball early.”

Coaching tips

This will teach players that they do not need to run towards the receiver before passing, allowing the receiver space.
