EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Lineout recovery

Not every lineout take is clean. Use this session to help your players learn how to recover the ball (or chase through onto opposition ball).

There are lots of complementary skills in this scenario type session: ground work, rucking, body positions, communication.

ACTIVITY

  1. Put four attackers and two ruck-pad holders together as in the top picture – it will be in the shape of a two man lineout.
  2. The coach stands to the side of the lineout and throw a ball onto the ground behind the attackers. \

  1. They have to, between them, fall on the ball, securing it, whilst the ruck-pad holders try to disrupt.

DEVELOPMENT

  1. Take away one of the ruck pads, so there is one defender challenging for the loose ball.
  2. Have a player throw in the ball, but the lineout players can only play the ball with one hand (both teams).

GAME SITUATION

  1. Put a lineout together of at least four a side, with an attacking hooker, a scrum half on each team and an attacking and defending back (as in the bottom picture).
  2. Have a player throw hard and low to the lineout. Either team can win the ball, but can only use one hand to deflect the ball (just for the purposes of this exercise!)
  3. The scrum half has to pass the ball out to his back line player who then wins the point by kicking the ball. A failure to kick the ball cleanly means a point to the other team.

TECHNIQUE

  • Fall on the loose ball, with your back to the opposition.
  • Supporting players, get in behind the player on the ground and clear threats.
