Put your slow ball ruck plays into more game-like situations. This wrap play exercise is a good starting point, and you can then use it to develop other tactics. A wrap play turns slow ball into quick ball and allows your 9 to recycle it at pace. MORE
Quick Coach: Roll and rock
- Picking up the ball
- Closing down space
“An attacker picks up a rolling ball under pressure and then decides whether to pass or run to keep the play going forward.”
A 6-8m box and a ball.
HOW TO PLAY
Put a feeder at the side of the box and an attacker at the end of the box. Put a defender at the other end of the box.
Have the feeder roll the ball into the box for the attacker to run onto and pick up.
When the ball is rolled into the box, the defender comes forward to put pressure on the attacker. In the meantime, the feeder runs into position to support the attacker.
The attacker runs or passes.
The defender aims to touch the ball carrier in possession.
Change the starting positions of the attacker and defender.
This is a fast-moving exercise, so 2 v 1 should be fine, with lots of rotation. However, you can add in another attacker.
