EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Step in and tackle

U11–U12 | DEFENCE 2

Get players used to getting feet in close to the ball carrier before making the tackle and getting the head behind the ball carrier or to the side

  1. Set out 12 cones in a large X shape with a 1m box in the middle.
  2. Put a tackler on one side of the 1m box and a ball carrier on the other side, facing him.

Step in and tackle 1

  1. On your signal, the ball carrier moves to one of the cones to the side of him (you indicate left or right) and runs straight for the cone in front of him. The tackler moves forward and to the side to make a side-on tackle.

Step in and tackle 2

  1. Repeat the exercise four times, moving to both left and right cones. Once the players are confident working from the 1m cones, move the ball carrier back to the middle cones cones and repeat. Finally, move him back to the end cones. The tackler always starts from the 1m box.
  2. Swap roles and repeat in the opposite direction.

You will need

  • 1 ball
  • Cones
  • Bibs (optional)

Got more players?
