EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Eight-man drift session

Even with less than 10 players, you can run an effective and very active drift defence session. Use this activity as a warm-up for a larger group work out as well.

  1. Put two sets of three attackers standing at one end of the box and two defenders at the side, about 3m from the attackers.

  1. On your call, the first set of attackers tries to score at the other end of the box while the defenders slide across to prevent this using touch tackling.

  1. When and if attackers get to the try line, they regroup and come back to the other box to hand over to the next set of attackers. They also restart at the far end in the other box if there’s an infringement or tackle made.
  2. Repeat twice for each group of attackers before swapping roles. The defenders will be tired by the end.

DEVELOPMENT

Once defenders have learned what to do, remove the cones that divide the channels and try it across the full width as a 5v3 with one attacker becoming a defender.

TECHNIQUE

ATTACKERS

  • Draw the defender.
  • Look at the space in front of them as the sliding defence may allow a step inside.
  • Use an inside pass if the slide is too aggressive.

DEFENDERS

  • Communication as to when to slide quickly and or stay close.
  • The inside defender covers the space between them in case of a side-step.
  • Be aware of an inside pass.
