EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Skills for the close support

The players who are most likely to take the next pass need to use the following skills:

SCANNING

Support players need to look at where the defence are and in relation to themselves and the ball carrier.

In this case, 1 in this picture might see gap for the ball carrier to go through and so might hold their run.

DEPTH

Far enough behind the ball carrier to run onto the pass.

ANGLES

Attacking the spaces in the defence by changing the angle of the run.

CATCHING

Hands up and ready when they are needed, but not too soon because they may lose their balance.

And then, take the pass.

COMMUNICATION

Passing information to the ball carrier on when and where to pass.

Let’s now consider some skills for the players not so close to the ball. Some of the skills are going to be the same. Can you think which ones?
