Quick ruck ball and winning the race
QUICK RUCK BALL
Quick ruck ball means the defence has less time to reset.
How do you win quick ruck ball? Good go forward and ball placement from ball carrier. Supporting players identifying and skilfully removing threats to the ball. A fast pass away from the ruck.
What do you need to do to exploit quick ruck ball? Attackers in position quickly, communication where to pass and where to attack.
If you have slow ball, then you are going to have to create quick ball. That comes from better go forward and support in the next phase.
Pressure: Defenders are out of position, so there are spaces to attack.
How are the attackers getting into position? They are arriving from a previous ruck or set-piece. They are then “turning the corner”.
Where should they attack? There are a number of options here
- In close to the ruck: quick to get to but often well defended.
- Between the defenders: draw them in and then pass out of the tackle or create go forward in the tackle.
- Outside the third defender: though can be isolated and they have more chance to come forward themselves.
Pressure: Defenders don’t know who to defend.
WIN THE RACE
What race do the attackers want to win? In a series of rucks across the pitch, the defenders and attackers race to be in position.
What happens when they win the race? If the ball is quick from a ruck, then there may less defenders in place, meaning more attackers than defenders.
Pressure: Defenders out of position and then run out of players to cover across.
