Different ways to support the ball carrier

If you counted five, then that’s good enough! There are actually six in the picture, plus the ball carrier and two opposition players.

Number two in the picture is mostly hidden by number one.

Now, how many of those players can take the next pass?

Probably, numbers 3, 4 and 6.

What will 1, 2 and 5 be thinking about? Where are they running to?

And then, if the ball carrier (BC) passes to say 6, what will 3 do next?

These are decisions that are made in the moment.

Also, notice that the blue defender is aiming to stop the pass. It looks like quite an aggressive tackle about to happen!

One further thought. If you were 3,4 and 6, looking at the ball carrier, where do you think the pass might go, if there can be a pass?

Probably to the left of the ball carrier, the way they are holding it.

Supporting players are making dynamic decisions based on:

  1. Their relationship to the ball carrier
  2. The position of the defence.

Let’s delve into this a bit more on the next page.
