EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

VIDEO: Surfs up – get back into the game

Use this scenario to develop your players’ ability to get back into the game quickly and make good decisions. They also have to scan as they recover.

  1. Have a pair of attackers and defenders run towards a “press up” space. They can start from any angle, as long as they are roughly the same distance away from the “press up” space.
  2. They then do two “clap” press ups – though you could make this any very short exercise.
  3. Both pairs then run to a “play” box which should be around 7-10m away.
  4. You throw a ball (or place it) for the attackers.
  5. Either using touch, grab or full tackles, the attackers aim to get to the end of the box.
  6. Swap roles and repeat.

PROGRESSIONS

  • Change the starting points.
  • Have either the attackers or the defenders running forwards into the box. That means the “press up” space is moved forward or backwards.
  • Add in more players to each group.
  • Change the activity at the press up space to a grapple or wrestle.

TECHNIQUES

  • Attackers, attack gaps or isolate a defender.
  • Defenders, say which attacker you are covering. Cut down space.
