EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

VIDEO: Game constraints rugby netball

Purpose of session

  • Improves aerobic fitness
  • Develops awareness of space
  • Improves the ability to sidestep in a pressured environment

Rules

  • 8 v 8 in half a field
  • Each set is 8 minutes in duration
  • No running with the ball
  • Pass in any direction
  • If touched, the ball is turned over
  • Score a point for sidestepping an opponent

Progressions

  • Players can run with the ball or limited to three steps with the ball. Plus receive a point for each sidestep performed (referee’s discretion)
  • All attackers must be in the last third of the playing area for the try to be scored

Key points

  1. The session fulfils the requirements of a constraints-led approach
  2. The scoring system encourages the practising of skills, not just scoring tries – in other words, process over outcome
  3. The players’ sidestepping technique is developed under pressure
