EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Tackle, turnover, attack

Develop your players’ ability to recognise and exploit opportunities to counter-attack from turned over possession.

By driving into tackle tubes, the attackers are disorientated momentarily. They then have to recover to play what’s in front of them.

  1. Place a ball on one of the tackle tubes, and a defender by each tube.

  1. Have a line of attackers come forward to tackle the tubes.

  1. As soon as they contact with the tubes, the defenders run to a cone and then back into the game.
  2. The player holding the tube with the ball stands out.
  3. Playing either full contact or touch rugby, the attackers recover the ball and aim to score at the far end.

DEVELOPMENT

  1. Introduce more players to each team. Add a player coming from deep on each team and then players wider out as well.
  2. Vary where the defenders come from to defend the counter-attack.

NOTE: If you don’t have access to tackle tubes, you can use players holding ruck pads or wearing tackle suits.

TECHNIQUE

  • The tacklers get up quickly after hitting the tackle bags and secure the ball.
  • Clear and accurate communication between the counter-attacking players.
  • Support players getting deep, attacking at pace and giving the ball carrier different options.
