Stay low!

Help your players understand the importance of keeping low in contact and funnelling in behind the ball carrier to maintain go forward.

  1. Five players (white) link arms and move forward
  2. Five players (blue) pass the ball between them
  3. Five players (red) put their hands on the shoulders of a player in front, moving forward with these players

  1. The ball carrier goes, through one of the “gates”
  2. The players at the back break off to deal with the attack
  3. The linked players keep walking forward

  1. Blue players have to keep low and drive out threats
  2. No more than three red players go into the ruck
  3. The linked players keep walking forward

HOW TO DO IT

  • Attackers (blue) jog around their half of the square, passing the ball in any direction. The white players link hands and spread out. The red players put their hands on the shoulders of the linked players (see picture 1).
  • The linked players walk forward in a line and the red players take their hands off their shoulders.
  • The attackers go through a gate under a set of linked arms.
  • Support players follow through this gate while the linked players keep walking forward (see picture 2).
  • A maximum of three red players can contest the resulting ruck (see picture 3).

TECHNIQUE

Ball carrier:

  • Ball in two hands and agile footwork
  • Stay low before, in and through contact

Support players:

  • React quickly to the gate you attack
  • Arrive low and stay low
  • Clear out threats aggressively with leg drive, short steps and body parallel to the touchline
