EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

How to know when to kick

Kicking gets a bad name. It’s the safe option from defence, but the risky option in attack. Less enlightened coaches would say: keep it that way.

If your players know when to kick, they can reduce the risks and increase the returns.

For example, are they asking these questions on the field

  • What is the shape of the defence?
  • Where are their wingers standing?
  • Can their wingers even catch?
  • Do they have a good counter-attacking team?
  • Who’s best to kick from the right side of the field?

Here is an article on thinking clearly about your kicking tactics.
