Supercharge contact fitness during pre-season

Starting to plan your pre-season training programme? Here are four activities that will have some real impact on your players’ contact fitness when you get the squad back together.

The first is a rugby-specific 16 drill circuit that requires very little equipment to set up. It’s also very flexible – you can drop in new exercises, or just start with eight and work up to the full 16.

For less experienced players, you can use a wrestling game such as No-pass rugby. It works well for older players, too, though you might find it gets pretty competitive!

For more experienced players, develop the sort of athletic ability you might expect American Football players to possess. Conditioning for contact focuses on the science around collision and the body.

Finally, use the drill Improve leg drive, to work on players’ ability to use leg power to break through contact.
