The driving tackle

U11–U12 | DEFENCE 8

Get players used to tracking the ball carrier, get close to him and then make the correct tackle

  1. Set up: In pairs on the try line. The attacker faces the defender with his arms folded across his stomach at arm’s length from a tackler.

The diving tackle 1

  1. On your call, the tackler, quickly steps forward, makes impact under the arm pits or lower, wraps his arms around the target and drives him back one step.
  2. Repeat five times before swapping over.

The diving tackle 2

  1. Once the players have got used to the routine, stand the defender on the try line and the attacker on the 5m line. On your first call, the attacker starts jogging on the spot.
  2. On your second call, the attacker steps into the space to the left or the right of his defender who comes forward to make a tackle under the arm pits or lower, with the correct foot forward to stop the attacker getting over the line.
