EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Core skills for 3 v 2s

Help develop good passing and running line habits so players can execute 3 v 2s in all sorts of game scenarios. The session builds from technique through to skill activation.

To hold defenders, attackers must run straight and pass hard. Simple techniques which need honing week-in, week-out.

  1. Put three players in each channel, with a feeder to the side.
  2. Have the ball fed to the first player who must pass before he reaches the cone in his channel.
  3. The second player repeats.
  4. When the third player receives the ball, he goes around his cone and sets up as the feeder for a return passing movement.

  1. In the meantime, the other players fill in the empty channels and turn to face back up the channels to repeat.
  2. Repeat four times before allocating new starting positions.

  1. Set up four attackers, with two in front, with two behind at an offset angle.
  2. Put two defenders in front of the first two attackers.
  3. Have the ball fed into the attackers who have to beat the defenders (using two-handed touch).
  4. Give the defenders different instructions on how to defend (like rush up, hold back, focus on certain players).

TECHNIQUE

  • Attack the inside space, between the cone and the nearside of the channel.
  • Push the hands towards the receiver.
  • Avoid spin passes if possible.
  • Run straight onto the ball (hips facing up the pitch).
