EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Scrambler

A dynamic full contact game that replicates emerging from the edge of a scrum, ruck or maul and tackling a player close to the try line. Bring the player down then deal with a 2v1

SET UP

Place three different coloured cones on the 5m line. The first one is 3m from three tackle tubes placed in a T shape. The next two are 5m and 7m apart.

A tackler (T) stands next to a tube with an attacker (A) next to a ball at the base of the tubes (picture 1).

THE RULES

You call “Go!” then a colour and A picks up the ball and attempts to score a try via that cone while T sprints across to make a tackle (picture 2).

Every player has three attacks before switching. Add a second attacker whose role is to take an offload or pass out of the tackle and create indecision in the tackler’s mind (picture 3).

SCORING

Attackers get one point for a try, defenders get one point for a successful tackle. Add up individual totals to get team scores. Switch players round, repeat and see who is the best tackling team.

TELL THEM

“Get across the field, don’t overstep, feet in close then wrap arms.”

“Do you need to tackle differently when it’s a 2v1?”

COACHING TIPS

Breaking off and making a tackle from a scrum, maul or ruck is a key part of any player’s game and this game replicates that scenario.
