Drive, ruck, support

U11–U12 | CONTACT 5

Replicate match scenarios by unbalancing and disorientating players before getting them to enter a tackle contest situation

  1. Mark out a 5m x 2m box with a 2m x 3m box alongside. Put an attacker with a ball and a defender opposite each other in the smaller box, and two attackers opposite two ruck pad holders in the larger box.
  2. When you say “go”, the attacker with the ball aims to get past the defender to the other side of his box, and the two other attackers drive into the two ruck pad holders in the larger box.

Drive ruck support 1

  1. The two attackers drive the pads back out of their box while the defender tackles and brings down the ball carrier (the ball carrier should allow himself to be tackled).
  2. Once they have been driven back, the ruck pad holders drop their pads and all four players run to support the tackle contest.

Drive ruck support 2

  1. Continue until the ball is clearly won by either side, or an infringement occurs. Rotate players after each go.

Drive ruck support 3

You will need

  • A 5m x 2m box next to a 2m x 3m box
  • 1 ball
  • 2 ruck pads
  • Bibs

Got more players?

Maintain a steady rotation of players through the activity, or set up more boxes alongside.

What to tell your players

“Stay on your feet in the tackle contest”
“Keep driving over the ball”
“Move quickly to support the tackle”
