EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Defend on the run

This 3v3 game teaches defenders to get back and enter a ruck from the right place while attackers have to support, keep possession and team up to beat the lone defender.

SET UP

Create a T-shaped playing area as shown in picture 1. Have two tackle shield holders guarding the entrance to the large playing area and place a tackle tube and defender close to the try line. Three attackers, one with a ball, wait at the end of the channel.

THE RULES

On your call of “Go!” the ball carrier runs through the narrow channel, breaks through the shields and goes to ground just before the tube (picture 2).

The shield holders drop their shields, turn, run to the tube, step over and look to steal as if a ruck while the other two attackers fight for the ball for three seconds. Once the ball is secured, the try line is attacked and the single defender looks to make a tackle.

Have three attacks then switch roles.

SCORING

  • Defenders score one point for stealing the ball or one point for preventing a try.
  • Attackers score one point for scoring a try.
  • Add together points from three runs to find the winning teams.

TELL THEM

“Make sure you are at the correct height in contact.”

“Enter the ruck from the right side and get low to steal the ball.”

COACHING TIPS

This game concentrates both on attacking and defending. The defence must make tackles that count while attackers react to what is in front of them and support each other.
