Quick Coach: Corner try

CORE SKILLS

  • Handling
  • Defensive tracking
  • Communication

THE STORY

“Attackers aim to use feints, footwork and handling to score over one of two try lines.”

SET UP

A 8m by 5m box and a ball.

HOW TO PLAY

  1. Put two attackers on one corner and a defender about 3m from the opposite corner.
  2. When the attackers move away from the corner the defender can move forward.

  1. Attackers aim to score on either try line. They can pass in any direction BUT no passes can go over head height.
  2. The attempt is over if the ball carrier is touched, the ball knocked on, the attackers score or go into touch.
  3. Give each pair two attempts before swapping players around.

DEVELOPMENTS

  • Make it so the passes can only be with one hand.
  • Only allow kicks as passes, but the kick must be caught inside the box.
  • Start the defender on the middle of the long try line.
  • Have two defenders, but they are only allowed to move along the try lines. Add another attacker. (Good for five players)
  • Keep a score. Give more points for one line.

NUMBERS

Works well with up to five players. Use the 3 v 2 version for more activity – see the last development.
