Get “under” the defender
By running in rather than straight, the ball carrier can get “under” the defender and create a space for the next support player. Use this activity to work on the best lines and passes.
An “unders” line is where the ball carrier forces the defender to move in instead of straight or out. That leaves a potential space for a support player to run through.
- Set up the cones as above.
- The first receiver stands on the blue cone, takes a pass from the feeder, steps a couple of paces towards the middle of the gate and then pops the ball to the next player.
- It helps him understand the angles and the pass.
- To develop, extend the distance between the cones.
- Now the receiver runs onto the ball before passing when getting to the middle of the coned gate.
- Finally, have a defender run out as soon as the attackers move forward.
- He starts from a cone 2m to the right of the gate, and a few metres back.
- The first receiver aims to make it to the gate before the defender and then pass to the support player.
- Attack the space to force the defender out of position.
- Use the arms and wrists to push the pass to the support player
