“The game is not the teacher, the coach is.”

Letting the game flow gives players ownership, but learning happens when coaches connect moments in the game to the session’s intentions.

Hot feedback means stepping in with short, purposeful cues that guide, not stop, play. It’s feedback on the move: specific, individual, and timely.

Keep it brief, linked to the goal, and directed at the player who can act on it.

When hot feedback stays aligned to the session focus, players learn faster, without losing rhythm or flow.

Examples from session 11 of Block 1 from the U12s' curriculum:

1. Tackle, up and challenge

Hot feedback:
"Good low tackle. Now get to your feet quicker so you can challenge for the ball."
Why it fits: Reinforces the recovery theme without stopping the flow.

 
2. Kick-catch and play

Hot feedback:
"Nice read. Next time turn your body so the spill goes backwards and we can play straight away."
Why it fits: Links catching technique to playing away from the kick.

 
3. Kick chase

Hot feedback:
"Stay connected with your two inside. Hold that line so you arrive together."
Why it fits: Builds connected chasing units without stopping the game.

 
4. Kicking touch game

Hot feedback:
"Great kick choice. Now look early for your support so you can counter faster after the catch."
Why it fits: Promotes decision making and immediate transition.

 
5. 4v4 gridiron

Hot feedback:
"Strong contact. Secure the ball and work forward past the gain line before the tackle count resets."
Why it fits: Reinforces tackle recovery and ball security under pressure.
