Lightning quick pick and mix
This session makes players work at game speed with passing and decision making. It is more for backs than forwards but all players can test their passing competency.

What to think about
Adjust sprint distances and starting points to suit players such as shorter for Minis, longer for older players. The distance in picture 1 (3m) is a guideline only and is easily changeable.
Once out of the sprint zone, get your attackers to change their angle of running.
This is exactly what happens in a match at a setpiece so should be practised often and thoroughly.
set-up
- Run straight in the sprint zone and then change angles to attract defenders or find spaces once out.
- Pass to the runner who is taking the ball at pace.
What you get your players to do
Three attackers go through the sprint zone, past the cones to keep them straight. Once out of the sprint zone, they pass the ball along the line (see picture 1).
Develop by making the players change angles or run moves after they have exited the sprint zone.
Three attackers in the sprint zone, passing the ball once they have left it. They need to run straight through the zone then aim to change angles as a development.
Development
Add one or two defenders. From the arrowhead of cones, release them as attackers start moving through the sprint zone.
The defenders run forward, around the middle cone “A” and then around one of the other cones you indicate (see picture 2).
Use touch tackling to stop the attack reaching the far end.
Bring in one or two defenders to press the attackers, going around the middle cone A and then one of the designated cones. Use touch tackling.
Game situation
Three attackers run through the sprint zone, receiving a pass as they leave the zone. They aim to score at the far end. Three defenders run back to the far line from the midway point then turn to defend (see picture 3).
Depending on the pressure you want to put on the attack, you can withdraw a defender, so it becomes a 3v2.
Get three defenders to run to the far end and turn (optionally asking one of them to step out to create a 3v2). In the meantime, the attackers sprint to receive the ball, aiming to score at the far end
What to call out
- “Keep your depth in attack”
- “Attract defenders by running fast with the ball”
- “Pass firmly in front of receiver at chest height”
