Develop tackle technique in pre-season (and in-season too!)
Technically better tacklers are also safer tacklers. Develop tackling expertise with these exercises – they are ideal for pre-season training and are also great as revision tools as the season progresses.
You will note that they include plenty of footwork, which is an essential part of the process of improvement.
We will start with 4 tackling tips for inexperienced players, which is great for younger players who are coming back to their second or third season of tackling and will also work well for players who have just taken up rugby.
Then, use this Pre-season tackling exercise to develop your players’ basic tackling footwork before adding in more contact. It’s a 1v1 activity that will work well for all the players in your team.
Now, you can build up towards full tackling using an exercise with ruck pads, which encourages the players to be more explosive in the tackle area – this will develop the players’ confidence.
Finally, with a big emphasis on using better footwork, the Gate reaction activity will complete a good tackle technique session.
