EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Return to play: Handling skills

As we begin to return to play and guidelines are adjusted, assuming that contact might be a few weeks or more away, let’s focus on some handling skills.

Here are four activities to develop or revise your players’ pass and catch. You can modify them based on your Social Distancing protocols, and then as the season progresses, return to them with defenders.

Though Pick up and play – ideal for younger players is aimed at less experienced players, it’s actually is a good warm-up for more experienced players too. A gentle introduction to randomness of handling.

For more technical work, this activity is spot-on: Super-accurate push passing keeping the hips square. There will be no need to modify this exercise.

Pressure passing is a full session plan. Pull players out of their comfort zone. I’ve found that this also tests the players because they become fatigued quite quickly. So, a bit of fitness thrown in too. You will see how to develop when you are able to add defenders.

Finally, Realign fast, attack hard doesn’t use defenders, but poles. It will encourage better running angles and will be good preparation to help your players to remember how to fix opponents.
