EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

We now need more than just a game model

Motley Crewe RFC (above) had some improved performances at the end of last season. Good enough improvements that coach Vince (below) and the boys are keen to delve further into tactical periodisation.

They have realised the value of having a shared understanding of how they want to play, but now see opportunities to add more nuance to their game model.

Key benefits of a shared understanding:

  • Pull in the same direction in attack and defence.
  • See the same opportunities and understand which plays to use.
  • Know the roles to execute the plays.

Vince and the team have come to realise that there is a lot that they can do to improve, but their time together is limited so they want to understand how to train most effectively.

Specifically, they come up with the following questions:

  • How do they plan their pre-season/in season.
  • How do they make sure they don’t lose sight of long-term goals when they get into week-to-week matches.
  • How they can get the most out of their time together.
