Skills to support

Skills to support are split into three main areas

  • Skills for the ball carrier,
  • Skills for players close to the ball carrier,
  • Skills for players deep, late or far away from the ball carrier.

Skills can thought of as a continuum from simple to complex. The most simple skills work with no interference from the opposition. The most complex need the player to consider many factors, such as their relative position to their teammates and the speed and angle of the defenders.

Skills then feed into team tactics and strategies, such as “play to space”, or “create weaknesses”.

In this lesson, each topic will look at the skills for each of the three ways to use support.
