EXPERT SESSIONS AND ADVICE FROM QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED GRASSROOTS RUGBY COACHES

Potential IF-THEN rules

Here are some IF-THEN rules which you can sprinkle into your training sessions. Of course, your players can be part of this process.

Not every possibility is covered. However, just by considering options, the players will have done some of their tactical thinking, jointly, before they encounter a unique situation.

ATTACK

  • IF the defence is compressed, THEN move the ball wide
  • IF the defence is spread, THEN play through (look for off loads)
  • IF the other team is physically dominant, THEN keep the ball in motion avoid rucks

DEFENCE

  • IF the ball is in the air, THEN take space quickly
  • IF the ball is in hands, THEN track and keep feet under you
  • IF the ruck is live, THEN contest for possession

TRANSITION DEFENCE TO ATTACK

  • IF the ball is turned over, THEN get the ball in motion as quickly as possible (don’t allow the D to recover)
  • IF the ball is turnedover, THEN get the ball to a player with “eyes up”

TRANSITION ATTACK TO DEFENCE

  • IF the ball is turned over, THEN regain alignment ASAP
  • IF the ball is turned over, THEN try to create a ruck ASAP
